Albert Whitt Airport in St. Peter is undertaking new projects to help improve its ability to handle tenant growth.
The city-owned airport is known as the home of avionics and charter operator St. Pete Air, and the runway is being redesigned and new hangars are being added.
Airport manager Richard Lesniak said: “We are working on a master plan to relocate and build new runways so that they can accommodate a slightly larger fleet.”
These projects are essential for the airport to meet demand and continue to be an economic driving force supporting the employment of more than 660 residents.
This month, the airport will complete most of its $4.5 million Southwest Hangar project, which added two new hangar structures, replaced two buildings and added a mooring ramp.
The airport also plans to spend US$3.7 million to repair another runway, build a new taxiway, and update the lighting to LED lighting. The project was funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.
At the same time, long-term tenant St. Pete Air is planning to build a new 5,000 square foot corporate hangar for its Pilatus aircraft.
St. Pete Air currently has two other hangars on the property. The company is also engaged in maintenance work and operates a flight school.
The new hangar will be located in the middle of the airport, close to a self-service refueling facility.
It seems that Albert Whitted may surpass the Tampa Bay Times! It has surpassed its long-term nemesis, the St. Petersburg Times and the daily print editions of both! Power is fluid! Remember the dock park?
