Construction is underway on a new YMCA site in Watertown.

WATERTOWN, NEW YORK (WWNY) – It’s hard not to notice the erupting steel foundation of Watertown. They are part of the construction process for the new Watertown YMCA. The interior is starting to take shape, so let’s go inside and take a look.
After years of planning and groundbreaking over the summer, the new YMCA in downtown Watertown is taking shape.
“The ceiling will remain open, so we will have a lot of air and a lot of light,” said Denise Young, executive director of the Watertown YMCA.
Now most of the shell of the structure is ready. Partitions are raised and some rooms are tiled.
“From idea to completion, we are 80 percent ready. If you’re talking from construction date to completion, we’re 60 percent complete,” Yang said.
Along with the new YMCA, a large indoor track and plenty of space for other recreational activities.
The gravel pits will be replaced by a couple of indoor pools. The foundation is laid, the iron is being built.
“Let’s talk about steel refining. When was the last time we said that steel production in the center of Watertown is getting more expensive?” Young said.
According to urban planner Mike Lambis, no such steel structure has been erected in the city center since the 90s. According to him, such a project bodes well for the future of the city.
“Just keeping the momentum going. Just hoping to continue building and steer downtown redevelopment in the right direction,” Rambis said.
Much steel has been laid, and much more remains to be used. The new Y in Watertown is expected to open this November. At this time, the current location of Y will be converted to corporate and children’s offices.
