I-70 Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel Repairs Infrastructure – Colorado Department of Transportation

Clear Creek County/Summit. The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun repairing the infrastructure of the Eisenhower Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) through various construction projects. The first project started in July this year, and the rest will be built over the next few years. The work is expected to be completed in 2024.
EJMT is almost 50 years old and its infrastructure is outdated. I-70 and EJMT are Colorado’s primary regional and national access to commercial, recreational transportation, and mountain communities. These projects will rehabilitate some of EJMT’s key projects and improve conditions for public transport.
“These projects are part of CDOT’s 10-year plan, funded by Senate Bill 260 and the Bridge and Tunnel Enterprise,” CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew said. “I-70 is an important corridor for the movement of goods and services, such as medical supplies, food, and other essentials, and the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel is an important piece of infrastructure that keeps I-70 safe and efficient. The EJMT improvements will reduce the number of repairs to tunnels that are closed for emergencies and will also help extend the life of the tunnels by improving safety and communication for passengers.”
The first project, which will improve the bypass in the westbound tunnel, will begin in mid-July with the overnight closure of single-lane westbound I-70 from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am Sunday through Thursday. Not closed on public holidays. Sign up for weekly updates by emailing the project team at [email protected].
