oslo-based architecture office knut hjeltnes has replaced an old warehouse washed away by an extreme storm in 1992 in sildegarnsholmen, norway, with the straume weekend residence. the new building, which takes the same proportions as the old structure due to planning restrictions, sits on a small, rocky islet of its own, and comprises a combination of steel and timber in its construction.

allowed by planning restrictions to erect a new building with the same volume of the destroyed warehouse, knut hjeltnes has developed a three-story wood and steel residence topped with a gable roof, built to withstand future floods. the structure’s main construction comprises seven steel frames, wrapped in a timber envelope of hinged or sliding panels that can move depending on the residents’ wish. in this way, the building can remain completely anonymous when not in use with all the panels closed off, but transforms when it is inhabited.

accessed only by water, the entire building was constructed off-site, and brought into place via a crane vessel. four wooden boxes are hung in the construction’s steel frames, which enclose the living areas of the house, including bathrooms and bedrooms. interior spaces are characterized by a minimal material palette comprising mainly wood and concrete, while large openings throughout offer panoramic views of the surrounding norwegian landscape.
