On an open space in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Sher Maker Architects designed its own studio. The team worked with experienced craftsmen to study the possibility of construction and experimentation of different materials to create a practical and beautiful workspace, while helping the team concentrate and gain inspiration.
The site was originally an open space, with a huge acacia tree covering almost the entire area. Using old wood and steel frames, sher maker built a work area under a simple gable roof. The interior is divided into 2 floors and contains 3-4 studio units. The area under the eaves opposite the studio is set as a workshop for material testing and construction work, and can also be used as a lunch area.
The tip of the roof fell on the ground, floating vaguely above the original surface. It can not only focus the attention of the studio users, but also hide the internal space from external interference. Some parts of the roof were cut to allow pre-existing plants to grow normally. The foyer floor is constructed with materials that are easily found locally, including brick and gravel, to reduce the joints between the existing floor and the new building.
The project aims to eliminate the division of internal and external areas and merge them together. In this way, the natural sounds and temperatures of the four seasons, even the branches and fallen leaves, almost become the same as the inside of the hall.
“During the design and construction of this building, we don’t know what exact architectural language or shape is being formed,” shared the sher manufacturer team. “This is a building with many limitations and pitfalls, but when it was built and used for nearly a year, it became a part of our daily lives,” they added.
