Text description provided by the architect. The project is located in Guangzhou Traditional Industrial Area / West Bank of the Pearl River. The original building was built in the 1950s as a granary (four separate brick buildings, the most important granary in Guangzhou). The interior of the building was transformed by DOMANI and the converted space was used as an urban planning showroom and multifunctional activity center. The Jurong Bay City Showroom is a landmark project that will pave the way for the revitalization of the old part of the city. Based on the concept of “restoring the old as the picturesque”, the design revitalizes and organically preserves the old building space, which is the study and practice of intervention in the sustainable development of modern Chinese cities.
The warehouse building originally had a single function and a simple structure. The functional need for connecting the showroom is met by adding a steel and glass roof over the three separate buildings of the old building to create a consistent use and space.
From a structural point of view, based on budget and timeliness considerations, we chose a large span steel frame system + full slope glass curtain wall, which is a modern architectural technology. This structure also echoes the historical DNA of the original heavy industry. The main steel structure is built into the original silo pad in such a way that the original building structure is completely eliminated. The main steel column and the original construction beams are designed for a setback of 1.4 m. The column matrix forms a ring, which allows the original silo to be successfully transferred to the new functional logic. The interlacing of steel beams expresses a formal background, so vast yet so powerful. The slope of the steel structure inherits the slope of the original barn, and this is where we tried to create a new mechanism. The choice of materials is also subtle. It comes with central installation.
This central installation is a wooden frame, reconstructed after the demolition of the top of the original building. When a functional architectural structure turns into an art installation, the role value of the object is significantly reversed. Structure is the most enduring, practical and basic component of space, while art is completely abstract and spiritual.
The structure and materials of the four independent factory buildings on the original site have been preserved to the greatest extent, and the main material of the new area is imitation of industrial red brick. The triangular appearance follows the sloped angles of the roofs of the old building, providing a symbolic expression of the triangular stability of the form. Contemporary steel, glass and raw red brick form an aesthetic and thoughtful clash of materials and construction.
The steel structure of the canopy extends towards the ground, forming a semi-shaded space on the west bank of the river, interacting with the landscape. The relationship between the building and the site’s natural environment and landscape is integrated to support interaction and penetration between indoor and outdoor spaces. The project is planned and designed according to the new function of the building to implement the revitalization of the site.
